Q: Is AOL 2.0 different from the AOL Mail 1.x I already installed?
A:
Yes. AOL 2.0 supports E-mail and Buddy Lists/instant messages for Palm OS 3.0 through 3.5, and offers many new features including; mail sorting, smileys, and double-tap support. It also supports Palm's new Connection Manager allowing you to connect via IR, e.g., using a cellular phone. Please see below for more new features.

Q: If I am using AOL Mail 1.x, should I upgrade to AOL 2.0?
A:
Yes, you should upgrade to AOL 2.0 to take advantage of the many new features.

Q: Which Palm handhelds are compatible with AOL 2.0?
A:
AOL 2.0 requires a Palm handheld running the Palm OS 3.0 or higher.

Q: Do I need a Palm-compatible modem to use AOL 2.0?
A:
A Palm-compatible modem is required for operating systems below 3.3. However, with OS 3.3 or above, you can use the Palm Connection Manager to connect in various ways.

Q: How much RAM does AOL 2.0 require?
A:
About 400K, plus the size of any messages that have been saved in the File Cabinet.

Q: How much does AOL 2.0 cost?
A:
The AOL 2.0 application itself is free. When connected to AOL using AOL 2.0, you will incur charges at your normal rate.

  • Members on unlimited usage plans incur no additional charges. However, communication surcharges may still apply and will be charged monthly along with any charges for premium services or purchases, which will be added to your AOL bill.
  • Members on hourly usage plans will be billed for AOL 2.0 usage at the same rate as desktop AOL usage. For example, if you are on the $9.95/5/$2.95 plan and connect for 4 hours using a desktop AOL client and 3 hours using AOL 2.0, you will be billed for 7 hours of usage: $9.95 + (2 x $2.95) = $15.85. In addition, additional communication surcharges may still apply and will be charged monthly along with any charges for premium services or purchases, which will be added to your AOL bill.
  • Members on the "Bring Your Own Access" or "BYOA" plan will incur an additional surcharge of $2.50 per hour which will be added to your AOL bill (TCP/IP access at no additional charge might be offered in the future).

Q: Can I use my copy of AOL 2.0 with a different master account?
A:
The list of stored screen names cannot be modified. To use a different master account with a different set of screen names, you must you must delete AOL 2.0 on the Palm, delete the files from the backup directory on the desktop, then synch or reinstall AOL 2.0 to the Palm. You can, of course, always sign on as a guest.

Q: How will I be notified of an incoming instant message?
A:
In the upper right corner of the screen, an instant message icon flashes, alternating with the AOL logo to notify you of a new IM or a new message update from an active IM. An audible tone will also be heard. Tap the icon to retrieve your new IM.

Q: How many instant message sessions can occur simultaneously?
A:
AOL 2.0 currently supports up to 20 active sessions.

Q: How do I switch instant message sessions if I have more than one active session?
A:
In the Online Tab of the Online Buddy List screen, double-tap on the screen name in the Active Instant Messages list you would like to switch to.

Q: How can I insert a smiley into my instant message?
A:
On the Instant Message screen, tap the Smiley icon to insert emoticons.

Q: Can I save frequently used words or phrases so I don't have to tap/graffiti the whole thing in every time?
A:
Yes. Tap the Shortcuts icon to insert frequently used words or phrases stored in your handheld. (Select Shortcuts from your handheld's Preferences application to edit Shortcuts.)

Q: Can I add, delete, or rename buddies and/or groups on my handheld?
A:
Yes, the Setup tab on the Buddy List screen allows you to add, delete or rename buddies and/or groups.

Q: How can I turn the instant message sounds on my handheld on or off?
A:
From almost any screen in AOL 2.0, tap the Menu icon, then tap Preferences from the Options Menu. Tap the Sounds check box to add or remove the checkmark.

Q: Can I attach an automatic e-mail signature to e-mails I send from my handheld?
A:
Yes, you can set up your signature on the Write Mail screen by tapping the Menu icon, then tap Signature. You can have your signature always inserted or you can insert it only when you choose.

Q: Can I sort my e-mails to display by the sender's name?
A:
Yes, you can sort e-mail by date, sender or subject. From almost any screen in AOL 2.0, tap the Menu icon, then tap Preferences from the Options Menu. Tap the Sort by down arrow, and make the desired selection.

Q: Can I double tap to read an e-mail?
A:
Yes, simply double-tap the message.

Q: Can I block users from seeing me on their Buddy Lists?
A:
Yes, you can set or change your privacy preferences in AOL 2.0 at any time. From either the Buddy List screen or the Inst Msg screen, tap the Menu icon, then tap Privacy Preferences from the Options Menu and make the desired selection.

Q: Which features of the AOL desktop e-mail software are not supported in AOL 2.0?
A:
AOL 2.0 does not support Status, Unsend, rich text (including hyperlinks), embedded images, background images, uploading/downloading attachments, and embedded sounds. Also, messages larger than 32K will be truncated when downloaded to and viewed on the Palm handheld.

Q: Can I synchronize my AOL 2.0 File Cabinet with my AOL desktop client Personal Filing Cabinet?
A:
Not at present. However, this feature may appear in a future release of AOL for the Palm OS.

Q: I accidentally deleted AOL 2.0. Can I restore my File Cabinet from backup?
A:
Yes, provided your File Cabinet has been backed up and you do not delete the Palm desktop software. You back up your File Cabinet every time you do a HotSync. After AOL 2.0 has been deleted, restoring the File Cabinet requires that AOL 2.0 be reinstalled during the next HotSync following the deletion.

Q: Why is my password displayed as I enter it?
A:
AOL 2.0 displays passwords during entry to minimize Graffiti errors. However, saved passwords are never displayed.

Q: Can I switch applications while signed on?
A:
Yes. Simply tap the Applications icon to open the screen of applications icons. Use any application on your handheld. Then tap the Applications icon to return to the icons screen, and tap the AOL icon to return to AOL 2.0.

Q: Can I beam the AOL 2.0 application to another Palm handheld?
A:
Yes. Beaming of the AOL 2.0 application is supported via the Beam option in the Applications Launcher. However, items of personal information – such as screen name, passwords, File Cabinet data, or locations – are not beamed. Only the AOL 2.0 application is beamed.

Q: Can I beam records from within AOL 2.0 to another Palm handheld?
A:
No. Beaming records within AOL 2.0 is not supported.

Q: If AOL 2.0 displays an incorrect e-mail date or time, how can I fix it?
A:
The date and time displayed by AOL 2.0 are determined by the settings of your Palm handheld (local date and time) and the time zone determined by the AOL Host. Make sure the date and time are set correctly on your Palm handheld in the General panel of the Preferences application.

Q: How do I add new e-mail addresses to my Address Book?
A:
To add a new address:

  • Tap the Address Book icon or button.
  • Tap New. (Required fields for AOL 2.0 are: Last Name and/or First Name, and E-mail.)
  • Enter last name and/or first name, and e-mail address.
  • Tap Done to add the name and e-mail address. You can now use this address to write, reply to and forward mail.
